The other day I had a craving as I was walking through the grocery store. I grabbed some bratwurst and a jar of sauerkraut and headed home to figure out how to make a great slow cooker recipe with these two ingredients. It was a weird craving because this a dish I have never made or even thought of making before. I was at my neighbors house a week ago and she had some sauerkraut cooking on the stove all day and the smell was so good. I'll be honest with you, I thought you just open a jar of kraut and serve it straight from there. I had no idea you could really make something wonderful out of it. Am I alone? Anyone with me? If so, you guys, we have really been missing out!
This was so good and totally transformed in the slow cooker from a sour cabbage side to a delicious sweet and tangy accompaniment to the bratwurst. Since they were both cooking together with some apples, onions, brown sugar and mustard, they were both so full of flavor. After we got home from a long night of after school activities and we were able to sit down and enjoy our already made and waiting for us meal.
Sweet Girls reaction was the best. When she saw me slicing and setting the slow cooker up earlier in the day, she turned up her nose and insisted dinner was going to be gross because she doesn't like hot dogs. Guess who really loved this dish? I love being able to show the kids how important it is to try something you may think you don't like because a lot of times you discover something new that you enjoy! That was the case with Sweet Girl and this slow cooked Brat and Kraut dinner.
