Apple Butter in the Slow Cooker

I am still cooking and baking my way through those apples outside (incidentally if any of my neighbors are reading this, please help yourself to some apples!)
This time I made Apple Butter in the slow cooker.  I remember a friend of mine posting on Facebook about an apple butter she made before and asked her to please send the recipe my way.  The recipe she had for me is from Changing My Destiny and it is so good!
When I was making it, I couldn't help but think, "How is this different from making applesauce?"  I honestly don't know what about the process was different but I can tell you in the end you end up with a more concentrated flavor and a thicker sauce. Maybe you just let it cook longer? It is so good - did I mention that earlier?  And an added bonus, the house smells wonderful too.

recipe from Changing My Destiny
Ingredients:
12 apples, peeled and cubed
1/2 cup of water
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon allspice

Directions:
Throw the apples n the slow cooker and add the spices, toss to coat.  Add the water and set on low or high, just let it go until it thickens.  I left it on low for most of the day and then turned it up to high and propped it open as suggested in the original post .
Once it is done you can choose to blend it to a smoother consistency or just leave it (I left it as is.)

  1. I've always wondered what the real difference is between apple butter and apple sauce, since they do taste difference but the process is largely the same. Such a mystery. Albeit a delicious one.
