Candied Kumquats



My kids love fruit!  They are always willing and wanting to try a new fruit - even Little Man (too bad this is not the case with him and vegetables.)  I decided to grab some kumquats the other day in the store - something new for all of us.  We washed them off and popped them on our mouths and then we all looked at each other and said "are you sure your not suppose to peal these?"  (your not) -we also all had a look on our faces that basically read - do I swallow this or can I spit it out.  I wasn't about to give up though I looked at them and felt like they needed to be candied - and since I knew no one was going to eat them this way I figured why not give it a try.  I made  a simple syrup with equal parts sugar and water (1/2 cup each).  I brought it to a low boil and stirred to dissolve the sugar.  I then added the kumquats (I quartered them and got rid of the seeds first.)  I  lowered the heat and let them simmer while stirring until the liquid turned syrupy.


I keep it in the refrigerator and use it to top all different things.  

We had it on vanilla ice cream:

I had it with yogurt and granola (actually that is Kashi Go Lean):

This morning I topped my oatmeal with it.  The flavor is similar to a marmalade. I confess the kids still aren't big fans of the fruit but I like it candied.

Have you tried kumquats?  I'm wondering how else I could have used them.

  2. Yeah for the kumquat! We live blocks away from Chinatown and the market is full of kumquats right now. Last year we made Kumquat art work

  3. I love kumquats! They transform in your mouth as you're eating them -- first you get hit with the super tart juice, then the flavor mellows out as you chew the peel. I like food that surprises.

    When I make carrot cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, I top them with a garnish of thinly sliced candied kumquats.

  5. What a good idea! I've done that with my kids too, bought something to try and we're all trying to figure out a nice way of saying "Please don't make me eat this!"
